This blueberry whiskey smash is a perfect refreshing summer cocktail. Sip it on the porch for an evening happy hour, or over brunch. Hell, make one in between remote meetings while working from home. Whatever excuse you need, just whip up one of these babies and treat yourself!
Bourbon is my friend. I enjoy it straight, on the rocks, or any other way you can serve it. So it’s not surprising that when I put a twist on a classic, and made a blueberry whiskey smash, I liked that too. With just enough fruit to mellow out the bourbon, this makes a very drinkable cocktail. Word to the wise, one can turn in to four very quickly.
Making the blueberry simple syrup
Don’t let making your own simple syrup intimidate you. The name says it all, as it is extremely SIMPLE. All you need to do is bring a half a cup of water, half a cup of sugar to a simmer, add a cup of berries, and simmer for about 20 minutes or so. Then strain, cool, and viola!
Choice of Bourbon
When it comes to choosing your bourbon, don’t get too hung up on this. You don’t want to cheap out, but also remember this has a few other flavors that will mask some of the subtle notes of a super top shelf mash. I just so happened to have picked up a bottle of bulliet bourbon recently and thought it would be perfect. They are not sponsoring this post, I just think it has a nice spice that holds up well to the fruit and sugars in this drink. I also don’t feel like I’m committing a crime by mixing since it comes at a fairly affordable price point. That being said, if you’re money bags Mcgee, then by all means, fill that shaker with some pappy van winkle! (Please don’t actually do that)
